Maintenance Technician Grade 4

Crane & Co., Inc., a premier manufacturer of fine stationery and currency papers, currently has an opening for a Maintenance Technician – Grade 4 at Crane's Personal Design Services, located in North Adams. This position is on the 2nd shift (3:30 pm to 12:00 am).

The Maintenance Technician is responsible for performing all duties defined by the Maintenance Manager. This includes but not limited to installation, maintenance and repair of all assigned equipment, components and systems to include, paper printing, paper converting equipment ,mechanical power transmission components and systems, electric motors, compressors and pumps, valves and piping systems, fans and blowers, hydraulic components and systems, mechanical assemblies, material handling equipment. These responsibilities include: preventative maintenance, trouble calls, night calls, and carrying out project work in all areas of manufacturing.

NOTE: Due to the critical nature of this position, candidates will be required to demonstrate job related skills.

Job Qualifications - Technical:

Required proficiency in the following:

  • Make in-field repairs to miscellaneous piping systems, i.e. air, stock and process water. Working knowledge of lubricants, lubrication and lubrication application practices
  • Fluid pumping technology, applications, maintenance and repair. (i.e.: compressors and pumps)
  • Repair of hydraulic system equipment, technology, controls and applications
  • Maintenance fabrication, layout, welding, assembly and installation
  • Properties of equipment used for paper printing and converting. Including but not limited to; pumps, electric motors, piping, gearing, fans, refiners, printing press rolls, presses, dryers, etc.
  • Use of Elec. and gas operated welders (MIG, TIG, ARC)
  • Use of cutting torches and plasma cutting machines
  • Portable Welding Equipment (field setup and operation)
  • Test equipment for mechanical measurements, data collection and troubleshooting
  • Blueprint drawings, schematics and diagrams of mechanical components/systems
  • Hoisting and rigging equipment, methods and applications
  • Applicable hand, power and machine tools and other applicable installation/service equipment
  • Identification of various types of shaft couplings
  • Removal/Installation and setting of clearances of various types of bearings without direction
  • Knowledge of mill compressed air systems and related components
  • Use of lathes and Bridgeport equipment.

General understanding of the following:

  • Accepted mechanical principles, practices, methods and procedures
  • All applicable laws, regulations & codes (i.e.; NFPA, OSHA, etc.)

    Desired proficiency/understanding of the following:

    • General understanding of fire protection systems within mill and related buildings
    • Installation of centrifugal pump mechanical seals without direction
    • Proficiency in all aspects of shaft and roll alignment technologies

    Qualifications - General:

    • High School Diploma or equivalent experience
    • Ability to lead others in a group setting
    • Ability to work independently and with others in a teamwork environment with minimal direction
    • Basic computer skills required for successful completion and documentation of assigned tasks
    • Competent in basic mathematics
    • Knowledge and understanding of company policies and procedures
    • Willingness and ability to climb and work off ladders and scaffolding
    • Willing and able to advance thru the Maintenance Line of Progression
    • Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License and possess own transportation
    • Must be willing and able to work at any Company location as needed
    • Must be willing and able to work any shift arrangement and overtime as needed
    • Must have maintained a good safety and attendance record with proven work performance in the past
    • Medical certification will be required to ensure the physical capabilities of job performance

    Job Responsibilities:

    • Respond to all duties assigned by Supervision
    • Lead others in a group effort
    • Perform and assist with the installation and fabrication of equipment from blue prints
    • Work in cooperation with various trades to complete assigned tasks
    • Positive interaction with co-workers, supervisors, engineers and customers, and contribute to team efforts
    • Maintain inventory and good repair of all assigned shop tools and equipment and consistently maintain good housekeeping in work area(s)
    • Must be able to be on night call list within 6 months of date of acceptance of position without supervision
    • Use JDEdwards work order and Time and Attendance systems, effectively
    • Perform preventive maintenance on all mechanical components
    • Trouble shoot problems and perform repairs on mechanical equipment as needed
    • Provide and maintain a permanent, personal phone number in which you can be reached in the event of a business need.
