Gilding

Gilding refers to the decorative technique of applying a thin layer of gold leaf to a surface. The Egyptians, ancient Greeks, and Romans were all big fans of gilding and with good reason. Gilding brings a dramatic and somewhat opulent look to everything from ceilings, manuscripts, clocks, and stationery.

Some of the most elegant Crane stationery papers feature gilded edges, frames, or motifs. All gilded Crane papers are produced by hand by artisans who spend up to a year in training under a master to perfect their craft. The gold leaf is applied in delicate sheets and burnished into place. Each piece of gilded stationery is truly one-of-kind.
