Computer Applications Engineer

Crane & Co., Inc., seeks a Computer Applications Engineer in the Process Control Department. The position is primarily responsible for providing expertise in applying personal computer (PC) technologies to control system and machine vision applications throughout the Company. The areas of expertise needed are: Networking (including Windows 2003 Active Directory); Operating Systems (Microsoft, Linux, Unix) and compatibility issues related to HW and SW obsolescence; design, development and support of database applications (SQLServer & Microsoft Access/Jet Engine); and software design and development of host applications (Visual Basic, Visual C++). A working knowledge of paper making, process control and machine vision technologies such as PLC programming, HMI's, DCS and image processing is also necessary. The incumbent will provide a close liaison with the company's ITG department and will ensure compatibility between company-wide PC/networking strategies and those used directly in control/machine vision system implementation on the manufacturing floor. Involvement in every aspect of application of PC's to the manufacturing process is expected requiring close association with process control engineers, technicians and production personnel. The incumbent will also be responsible for all aspects of managing projects; planning, design, cost estimation, budgeting, installation and commissioning.

The major challenge of this position is to stay abreast of the rapidly changing PC marketplace and provide appropriate guidance for hardware and software purchases and migration planning for applications relating to process control within the context of the company-wide perspective for PC and network support.

Education

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering, Computer Science or related discipline required.
  • Microsoft Certification in appropriate areas preferred.

Skills / Knowledge / Experience

  • Demonstrated ability to build good relationships at all levels of the organization.
  • Thorough knowledge of personal computer operating systems, configuration and networking schema.
  • Demonstrated ability to design and develop: database applications using SQLServer and/or Microsoft ACCESS; applications in Visual Basic, C++; HTML.
  • 2+ years experience in project management.
  • 4+ years in personal computer and networking application development including Windows XP, NT and 2000, Novell and Windows 2003 Active Directory.
  • 4+ years in manufacturing and converting support, preferably in the paper industry.
  • Working knowledge of process control and machine vision technologies such as PLC's, DCS, HMI's and image processing as they apply to paper making and finishing.
  • Ability to maintain effectiveness while under pressure of constant interruption of projects to address daily production problems, or simultaneous demands/needs in concurrent projects.

Must be able to pass and maintain security clearance through the U.S. Treasury Department.
